You are invited to join as he delivers the 2019 .
- This is one of the many events taking place during .
Title of lecture: On the edge: Positioned in one of the richest ocean ecosystems on earth, learn how 果酱视频鈥檚 physical location inspires its researchers to lead critical marine and ocean-related research
Date: Wednesday, Nov. 13
Time: 7-9 pm
Location: Celestial Gallery, Johnson GEO Centre, Signal Hill Campus
Admission is free. Parking is available in the GEO Centre parking lot. Light refreshments will be served after the lecture.
Initiated in 2006, the Canada Ocean Lecture Series is a joint initiative between the Shorefast Foundation and the Faculty of Environment at Simon Fraser University and other partners. The aim of the series is to create awareness of Canada鈥檚 vast marine environment and its importance to Canadians. Lectures to date have been held on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and in central Canada.
As Newfoundland and Labrador鈥檚 university, 果酱视频 has demonstrated strengths in areas ranging from ethnomusicology to genetics and from archaeology to social enterprise and entrepreneurship. It is the only anglophone university in Canada to offer comprehensive folklore programs at all levels. Its medical programs have the best track record in Canada at training doctors for careers in rural areas and its Queen Elizabeth II Library houses the largest research library collection east of Montreal.
果酱视频 is uniquely positioned in the harsh maritime environment of Newfoundland and Labrador. Its faculty members are global experts in the fields of ocean engineering and science, offshore industry and policy, and technology. Their work is supported by world-class research and facilities and strong public partnerships with the people, industries and organizations that live and work here.
More than 40 per cent of 果酱视频鈥檚 research is ocean-related (68 per cent in the Faculty of Science alone). If there鈥檚 ocean research happening in the North Atlantic, 果酱视频 is likely involved.
This presentation will highlight some of the 21st-century explorers, and their innovative research, who help strength 果酱视频鈥檚 international reputation for leading-edge research.
Dr. Bose will also showcase 果酱视频-led research projects that focus on techniques and technologies to aid in oil spill response in Canada. These six initiatives recently received more than $5.5 million in support from the federal government under Fisheries and Oceans Canada鈥檚 (MPRI).
The projects aim to ensure Canadians have access to the best scientific information and methods available to respond to oil spills by supporting collaborative research among oil spill experts both in Canada and worldwide. .
Dr. Bose is principal investigator on the project, Oil Spill Reconnaissance and Delineation Through Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Technology that received $1,380,000 in support.
As a researcher, Dr. Bose's interests include marine propulsion, autonomous underwater vehicles, ocean environmental monitoring, ocean renewable energy, ice/propeller interaction and aspects of offshore design.
